The world's first banana recovery & rehabilitation center

A committee of banana grandmothers with nothing left to prove.

Bad Bananas are what happens when you get left in the fruit bowl too long. Everybody wrote them off. They got better anyway: sweeter, deeper, more interesting than the firm yellow ones nobody remembers.

They're a little mischievous about it. The rule at this bakehouse is that the browner and more spotted you are, the older, wiser, and more trouble you're allowed to be.

The cast

Meet the nanas

Green polka-dot bandana, round glasses, pearls, holding her cookie tray

Heavily spotted, golden-brown

Granny Bananny

The ringleader. Green polka-dot bandana, round glasses, pearls she has never once taken off. Warm, bossy, and the actual source of most of the trouble.

Runs: Trouble Makers

Red cat-eye sunglasses, flower behind the stem, best hair in the bowl

Spotted gold

Banana Foster

Red cat-eye sunglasses, flower tucked behind the stem, best hair in the bowl. Sarcastic, unbothered, has opinions about everyone's glaze choices.

Runs: The glazes

Cat-eye glasses on a chain, cardigan, house slippers, bingo dauber

Deep brown, very spotted

Nana Dottie

The oldest. Cat-eye glasses on a chain, cardigan, house slippers, undefeated at bingo. Moves slowly. Talks fast.

Runs: Bingo Bars & the Darlings

Sewing apron, thimble, guarded pincushion, barely spotted

Barely spotted

Nana Pearl

The young one, and the fussy one. Sewing apron, thimble, a pincushion she guards. Measures everything twice.

Runs: Nana's Sewing Kit

Nearly black banana, sunglasses, green high-tops, beach chair, coconut drink

Nearly black

The Bad Banana

Sunglasses, high-tops, a beach chair he refuses to leave. Retired. Unbothered. Has seen things. He's on the sign because he earned it.

Runs: Supervising

The ongoing scandal

There is no banana in the Trouble Makers.

Granny Bananny makes tiny chocolate chip cookies. At a banana bakehouse. She has been asked about this repeatedly and her position has not changed. They are criminally delicious and criminally banana-free, and she would like everyone to move on.

Why it's true

The good part is the part you'd throw away.

Green bananas make bland bread. As a banana ripens, its starch turns to sugar, its flavor deepens, and its skin goes spotted and ugly. By the time it looks like garbage, it's at its absolute best.

So we buy the ugly ones: the markdown bin, the ones the store can't sell. They cost less, they taste better, and they were about ten hours from a dumpster.

Rescued. Rehabilitated. Redeemed. ♥
